Reviews: Isaiah's Story

Image
Author:    SethAMott Book:  Isaiah's Story  **Warning Spoiler Ahead** SUMMARY The book is based on the view of a young fellow (Gender and name wasn’t specified in the first chapter. But the blurb regarded him as Isaiah Bradford) struggling to come to terms with leaving his old neighborhood. His father was left a house by a dead relative and for some intricate reasons, decided to move. But the blessing of a bigger house was not without a mystery. Not knowing what might lurk in the storm and the darkness of the old house. The family plunges right into a set of heart wrecking paranormal inexplicable events. REVIEW I must admit I was intrigued by the prospect of reading a paranormal. Isaiah’s Story kept me on my bed for hours with captivating plot twists, gripping cliff hangers, and free-flowing conversations. I think the book has a chance of becoming bigger and better. Firstly, I noticed the writer had issues with knowing when to break the para

Paragraphing

Applying Paragraphing Techniques in Your Fiction We’ve been looking at paragraphing techniques piecemeal out of necessity. But once you’re actually writing, you tend to think holistically: What preceded this moment, and what must happen next. To use a musical metaphor, how will you orchestrate your story, using all the paragraphing techniques I’ve just described? Instead of deploying all five types at once, you’ll likely be using one or two at a time, giving them double duty (for instance, using dialogue that reveals character attitudes while deepening the story’s milieu). In George Gissing’s  New Grub Street —an underappreciated (in my opinion) novel about commercial writers struggling to make a living in late-19th-century London—pay attention to the way the author orchestrates these opening paragraphs to pull the reader in. As the Milvains sat down to breakfast the clock of Wattleborough parish church struck eight; it was 2 miles away, but the strokes were borne very distin

Commas, Colons, Semicolons and Dashes

Which Punctuation Mark Should I Use? Knowing which punctuation to apply within sentences can be confusing. But rules are important and made to be followed, especially in academic writing. Putting a comma between two independent clauses will confuse your readers and make your work frustrating to read. On the other hand, a well-placed semi-colon can add nuance and subtlety to any kind of writing. Keep the following rules in mind when choosing to use a comma (,), colon (:), semicolon (;), or dash (—). When to Use a Comma Commas are the most frequently used (and abused) punctuation mark in most kinds of writing. The reason for this is that they have so many uses and so many rules—it can be hard to keep track of them all. Let’s take a look at just a few of the comma’s crucial functions and discuss when to choose a comma over another similar punctuation mark. To list items or short phrases: I bought bread, cheese, and pickles at the grocery store. To separate lon

Character Development

Image
What Is Character Development? In fiction writing, character development is the process of building a unique, three-dimensional character with depth, personality, and clear motivations. Character development can also refer to the changes a character undergoes over the course of a story as a result of their actions and experiences. Why Is Character Development Important? A novel consists of a character interacting with events over time. Character and plot are inseparable, because a person is what happens to them. Without a clear sense of who a character is, what they value, and what they’re afraid of, the reader will be unable to appreciate the significance of your events, and your story will have no impact. Like real people, fictional characters have hobbies, pets, histories, ruminations, and obsessions. These characteristics inform how a character reacts to and feels about the things that happen to them. It’s essential to your novel that you understand all aspects

Setting In Literature

Image
Setting is the time and place where a scene occurs. It can help set the mood, influence the way characters behave, affect the dialog, foreshadow events, invoke an emotional response, reflect the society in which the characters live, and sometimes even plays a part in the story.   It can also be a critical element in nonfiction as the setting provides the framework for what is being discussed. To make the setting come alive, it’s important to include significant details. That doesn’t mean describing everything the characters see, or giving a complete history of where the scene occurs. Giving enough information to help readers visualize the setting is important, but too many minor details will bog down the story rather than move it forward. There are ways to clarify the setting without using long descriptive passages. For example: a) The type of vocabulary the characters use can suggest where they live or where the scene occurs. Be Better

Stop building walls around bad behaviors and making abode off belligerent characters with the sell out excuse, 'That's who I am.' You could be better. Strive to be better.
